Child Abuse Awareness...
Abuse can be physical contact such as fondling, rape or oral contact with genitals or nonphysical contact like talking to a child about sex, using explicit sexual language or watching a child undress can be considered child abuse.
According to Prevent Child Abuse America, usually the abuser is someone the child trusts. Any sexual activity with a child is abuse. The abuser may be someone the child knows well. They may be young or old, male or female. This can include a parent, grandparent, sibling, close relative or neighbor. Abusers often have access to children. They may be babysitters, teachers, health care providers, friends or a religious leader.
Tell your child that most adults are not child abusers.
Children should not mistrust all adults. Instead teach them to recognize unusual behavior and stay safe. Help your child practice saying "NO". Tell them never to keep a secret about someone touching them or anything that makes them feel comfortable or "funny". Tell them they should run away from anyone who tries to offer a ride or pose a threat. Both you and your children must understand that offenders use gifts, favors and affection to gain children's trust.
Abusers may have a history of abuse as a child, emotional immaturity, inability to see the harm in their actions, low self-esteem or ability to control impulses. Sometimes they are sexually attracted to children.
If your child is abused, remind them they are not to blame. Get counseling for the family if your child reports abuse. Our agency can provide counseling and referral services for victims and families.
